Story: New House Speaker Nograles will base his leadership through consultations with other congressmen

The elected Speaker of the House of the Representatives wants to have an open communication with other congressmen as he assumes the post yesterday.

Davao City Congressman Prospero Nograles was elected as the new Speaker last February 4 after the congressmen voted on the motion to declare the Speaker’s position
as vacant which was raised by Palawan Cong. Abraham Mitra and was seconded by Sorsogon Cong. Jose Solis.

“My leadership will be based on consensus and consultations with my peers. Decisions will be based on the general sentiment of my peers,” Nograles said.

Nograles said there are many adjustments to be made, “we are trying to form transition group for the transition from one speaker to another will be smooth. The plans of the congress should be taken slowly because I just had my oath. There are so many things to do.”

With regards to the changes of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman post at the Committee level at the House, Nograles said there were no changes for the meantime.

Before becoming a Speaker, Nograles is the Chairman of Commission on Appointments, but as of now he has no idea yet on whom he will assigned to replace his former post.

After the motion to declare the Speaker’s seat vacant, former Speaker Jose De Venecia made a speech full of sentiments against the First Family. Nograles said, issues raised on JDV’s speech should be refer to proper committee for investigations. However, the new Speaker said that he cannot recall if anyone made a motion to refer the speech to a proper committee.

But, if he will refer it, he said it should be on Committee on Good Government.

The new Speaker of the House is asking for more time for him to adjust on his new post. He said that he will do anything so that his peers will not get disappointed of him./MLE/DMS
