Story: 10 hurt in grenade blast in Surigao del Norte

Ten were reportedly hurt, all male, including 5 minors, after a grenade exploded in the waiting shed that they are staying for their gimmick moments.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm of September 30, 2008 in Sitio Capangdan, Barangay Urbiztondo, Claver, Surigao del Norte.

Police Inspector Angelo Dedomo, Chief of Police of Claver Police Station, said that the five minors were playing at the area, while the five others were having their drinking spree when suddenly, one male person, identified by two of the victims as Galo Gonzaga, 32, threw something on their area, not knowing it is a hand grenade.

“According to the victims, they thought what was thrown to them was a piece of stone, one of them even tried to pick it up, but when he was about to pick it up, it exploded,” Dedomo said.

Those who were in legal age were identified as Michael Blancada, 21; Santos Santillan, 55; Rolando Perales, 28; Jerry Gier, 36 and Reymond Parian, 18.

Most of them suffered from minor injuries in arms, legs and other parts of the body, except for a 14 year old boy who will have to undergo surgical operations after the shrapnel go through his left leg. He is the one who attempted to pick up the grenade for mistaking it as a stone.

As narrated by the victims to the police, Gonzaga was only walking when he thew the grenade, then left the area still walking.

Gonzaga is now facing multiple frustrated murder and is now being manhunt by the police. The police still investigating the motive behind the incident, because it is believed that Gonzaga has a argument in one of the members who were having drinking spree that night.
