Story: Public market in Naga City gutted by fire, estimated damages reached P100 million

A public market in Naga City in Bicol was gutted by fire which lasted for almost 10 hours, fire official said.

According to Chief Inspector Ronald Iguaras, Chief of Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Naga City, the fire started at around 10:00 pm of November 6, 2008, Thursday, but their attention were called at around 11:00 pm only because of poor communication.

The fire was out at around 8:00 am of November 7, 2008 Friday. The public market is located at Barangay Igualdad, Naga City.

“When we get there, 1/3 of the market is burning already, and we cannot penetrate inside anymore,” Iguaras said.

He added that the second floor and the third floor of the market is the one that was really damage because of the fire.

The building structure of the market is concrete, but the stalls inside which are about 1,000 were made of light materials. Also, the materials inside includes ready to wear clothes, shoes and some vegetables that cause the fire to easily spread.

Another reason why the fire was not stopped easily is because lack of water on their pumping stations.

The origin of the fire is at the vegetable stall at the right side 2nd floor of the market, estimated damages reached about 100 million.
