Story: Rebels gunned down farm caretaker in Negros Occidental

A farm caretaker was gunned down in Negros Occidental last June 16, 2008, Monday at around 3:30 pm at Barangay San Pablo, Manapla, Negros Occidental.

The victim was identified as Hermies Ostan, 40, and a beneficiary of a land in Hacienda Merian According to Senior Inspector Jose Laboyo, Chief of Police of Manapla Police Station 30 armed men went at the Hacienda Merian and looked for Ostan.

Ostan was located inside the warehouse of the said Hacienda the 30 armed men asked Ostan to go out. He was escorted outside the compound of the Hacienda and when they were outside already he was gunned to death.

The police recovered 6 empty shells from the crime scene. 2 from M-14 and 4 from M-16 rifle.

Laboyo said the New People’s Army is the group behind the killing of Osten because they identified themselves according to the witnesses and they are not wearing bonnet when they did the crime.

Laboyo said the motive of the incident still under investigation, but they are checking on land conflict as the reason why the NPA killed Osten.
